Abstract
Drawing on the ecological theory of aging, this study examined the association between the health status of older women in rural areas and their life satisfaction, focusing on the moderating roles of living in communal homes. Data came from the sample of residents in 5 regions of Gyeongsangbuk-do, 2 regions of Gyeongsangnam-do, and 62 communal homes and their peers in the conventional homes. Propensity score analysis was used to construct the comparison group, using the socio-demographic and health characteristics as matching variables. As a result, 238 (living in communal homes group=119, control group=119) piece of data were selected, followed by hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed as follow: 1) those who needed more assistance with the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) had a lower life satisfaction score, 2) the residents in communal homes reported a higher life satisfaction score compared to their peers in conventional homes, and 3) the negative association between the assistance with IADL and life satisfaction was moderated by living in communal homes. The study suggests the importance of housing alternatives such as communal homes to promote successful aging in place among older women in rural areas.
